  • Pay special atttention to the verbs that need or don't need a gerund.

ex.1 Complete the sentences with the gerund forms of the verbs below.

  1. ____________ too much alcohol is very bad for you.
  2. I don't like _____ bills.
  3. He really enjoys ____ his own voice.

  5. Her favourite sports are ____ and ____ mountains.
  6. ____ languages is hard work.
  7. I hate ____ goodbye.
  8. ____ is better than remembering.
  9. ____ animals can teach you a lot.
  10. "What's your job?" "____ the phone and ____ letters."

ex.2: Decide if it is a gerund or not. If it is a gerund, decide whether it is the subject or the object of the sentence.

Example:
I hate flying to New York.
→ It is a gerund. It is the object of the sentence (“flying to New York”)

  5. I was sleeping while the burglars broke into the house.
  6. Drinking coffee keeps me awake.
  7. I love eating chocolate.

ex. 3: Fill in the missing forms of the verbs               

  1. I enjoy ____ (go) on a mule trip.The man asked me how ____ (get) to the station.
  2. We decided ____ (run) through the forest.
  3. After ____ (go) to the ESP, we're going to have some food.
  4. After I ____ (run) up the stairs, I was tired
  5. Caitlin wanted ____ (send) Ruth a text but she forgot ____ (send) it.
  6. ____ (study) makes me tired.
  7. The teacher expects Paul ____ (study) hard.
  8. ____ (visit) my friend is great fun.
  9. Do you like ____ (do) sports?  - No, I prefer ____ (sleep).
  10. I like the idea of ____ (study) hard for a test because  I want ____ (get) good grades.

 


ex. 4: Translate the sentences into English

  1. Ich höre auf anzugeben.
  2. Der Politiker erkannte die Journalistin.
  3. Du genießt es, ihn zu küssen.
  4. Ryan ist daran interessiert, etwas über die Polizei in New York zu lernen.

ex.5: Write about yourself: What do/ don't you like doing? Write down at least eight sentences in your folders. (And of course use gerunds...)

 

You can use expressions like:

I enjoy, I hate, I don't like, I love, I detest, I am a fan of, ....


ex. 6: Decide whether it is an infinitive construction or a gerund.

  1. They managed to avoid ___________ (catch... and I explicitly WARN you...) by the police because they went abroad.score
  2. I feel so lucky ___________ (meet) the director of the film at the premiere last week.score
  3. We would rather ___________ (go) out last night but my cousin insisted on ___________  (come) to visit.score
